On Saturday February 4 2012 we took part in a national day of celebration to shout about everything that’s great about the UK’s public library service and to demonstrate the strength of the support that it commands around the country.
With the help of Hertfordshire Library Service we organised events in three library branches – Hitchin, Letchworth and Baldock – to ask users to help us demonstrate the strength of support that libraries commands in North Hertfordshire.
And it was brilliant. We met some fantastic, committed library users and also had the support of some mighty volunteers who helped us collect almost 300 signatures on our Library Valentine cards with more than 100 people also signing up to our Library Pledges.
We collaborated with Letchworth poetry group Poetry ID on two performances which took place in Letchworth library during the day – you can learn more about that here.
We also produced a North Herts and Stevenage book trail filled with suggestions for fiction and non-fiction reading on a local theme using books available from Hertfordshire libraries.
Here are some comments from readers on the day:
- “I will continue to use the wonderful libraries as I currently do. They are a wonderful asset.”
- “I have been coming to this library for 13 years – I wouldn’t do without it.”
- “I am a lifelong library user – one of our greatest treasures!”
- “We love our library!”
- “Can’t live without your service!”
- “Wonderful service.”
As a result of all this we established a track record of working successfully with the library service, got some extremely positive coverage in the local papers and reminded ourselves just how much people value their local libraries.
