If you believe in the importance of school libraries, and would like to do something to help support them, now’s your chance.
A group of school librarians is planning a mass lobby of Parliament on Monday October 29 (during half term). They will ask MPs to support a plan to add school libraries to the Ofsted Inspection Schedule – thus making it a priority for schools to keep libraries open and give better consideration to their library provision. Learn more from the Heart of the School website here.
A similar event was held by the campaign group Speak Up for Libraries in March this year on behalf of public libraries and was very successful.
Lobbying your MP is easy – the first step is to track down who represents you and the website TheyWorkForYou.com can do just that. Next, visit the Heart of the School website and look in the box at the top of the right-hand sidebar where you can download a letter with advice on making contact and what to say.
Writing to your MP will be a great help – and asking them to make an appointment to see you at the lobby will be even better. The campaign website also has details of how to keep in touch via Facebook and Twitter.
This is a really good cause – and, given that Hertfordshire schools have just lost a major source of support with the closure of the Schools Library Service, a really important one locally. We hope it’s something that you will support.
